So you just started a business, how do you keep the books?

Occasionally we recommend specific products or services and we may receive a commission if you click those links.

So you’ve started a business and need to track your sales. What next? Many solopreneurs start with a no-cost accounting solution, like Wave Accounting. We recommend it because you can track income and expenses, plus collect payments (and even handle payroll when you’re ready).

If you don’t do electronic payments and want to stick to just cash and checks, Wave is an awesome solution. Their biggest gap is a lack of purchase orders (if you subcontract or work with vendors who require POs for orders), but the clients we’ve recommended it to love it, and there’s always a solution to the PO gap (Excel or a DIY template, usually).

We work with a lot of small businesses, and they love this solution as a way to manage their finances without shelling each month for a more expensive software.
